The Antarctic Patagonian Ice Fields Research Program (A-PIRP) is a limited-edition and immersive field experience that offers Chilean and international students and professors the rare opportunity to learn and conduct science hookup science directly on Antarctic soil. This unique program brings together education, cutting-edge research, and community building in one of the most extreme and pristine environments on Earth.

A-PIRP is conceived as an exclusive expedition, designed for a reduced group of participants, where learning happens through direct experience in the Antarctic field. The program is structured around three interconnected objectives: education, scientific research, and the strengthening of scientific and human networks in Antarctica.
Although these objectives are interwoven throughout the program, the first phase places a strong emphasis on education and field training. Participants learn how to live, move, and work safely in the Antarctic environment, including polar safety protocols, glacier travel, extreme weather awareness, leave-no-trace practices, and teamwork in isolated conditions. They are also trained in the use of specialized equipment and techniques applied in glaciological and geomorphological research under polar conditions.

The second phase focuses on hands-on scientific research. Participants apply their newly acquired skills to develop and execute student-led research projects, working in small interdisciplinary teams. These projects are carried out under the close supervision of professors specialized in glaciology and Earth sciences, together with a select group of mountain guides with extensive experience in polar and subpolar environments.

The third objective of A-PIRP is to build lasting connections between key actors in Antarctic science. The program brings together students from the Master’s in Antarctic Sciences (with a specialization in glaciology) from Universidad de Magallanes, along with international students and researchers. Living and working together during this intense Antarctic field experience fosters deep professional and personal bonds. After the expedition, participants share their experiences and research outcomes with the broader scientific and local communities, contributing to the dissemination of Antarctic science beyond the field.
A-PIRP represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: not only to visit Antarctica, but to actively learn how science is done in one of the most challenging and scientifically relevant regions of the planet.
