  • The PIRP 2025 Team is Complete!

We’re excited to announce that the full team for PIRP 2025 is now confirmed ! The first steps of our journey have already begun — connecting virtually, sharing ideas, selecting projects, and starting the meticulous planning that will guide us through this incredible expedition. At PIRP, we know that planning is the backbone of every successful expedition . In the unpredictable and often extreme environment of Patagonia, thorough preparation is not optional — it’s what keeps us safe, efficient, and united as a team. History shows us why this matters. During his legendary Antarctic expedition, Ernest Shackleton  wrote extensively about preparation and how it allowed his team to adapt and survive when circumstances went sideways. For us, planning isn’t just about making checklists — it’s about building the resilience and adaptability that true exploration requires . Every conversation we have now — from gear discussions to project logistics and safety protocols — ensures that no “loose screws” are left behind (and that we don’t forget our heads in the process!). Planning allows us to: Anticipate challenges  and create strategies to deal with the unexpected. Build trust and communication  among the team before we even meet in person. Focus on the experience and the science  once we step onto the ice, knowing that the groundwork is solid. For us, a well-prepared team is a strong team . And while we can’t control Patagonian weather, we can control how ready we are to face it together. Stay tuned — we’ll be sharing updates, stories, and behind-the-scenes glimpses as the countdown to Patagonia continues.

  • We are back! What an adventure it was PIRP 2024

The 2024 Patagonian Icefields Research Program expedition was a great success and a thrilling adventure. We had a highly international team of ten students, five volunteer faculty members, two assistants and one mountain guide from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, France, Germany, Peru, Russia, Switzerland, and Taiwan. We did a lot of science, exploration and bushwhacking. The terrain was challenging, but our team was up to the challenge. We did many kilometres of GPR, flew our UAV all over the glacier, installed a dozen ablation stakes, measured river discharge and sediment transport, sampled microbial communities, mapped the glacial geomorphology, and installed cameras, a GNSS base and a seismometer. And above all, we had a lot of fun and built a fantastic team. Here is a short trailer of the expedition made by our cameraman and photographer, David Cossio. Our amazing team before leaving Bernal Glacier.

  • PIRP 2024 Scholarship recipients

The recipients of the three Scholarships for PIRP 2024 were selected and notified. We are excited to welcome two young female scientists from India and Russia and one student from Perú. These Scholarships are possible through the generous support of the International Geological Society and the PIRP community. The application period for volunteer faculty closes tomorrow, and we already have lots of interest and great applications. Students' applications will be received until September 15th.
